Kandariya Mahadeva is the largest and most elaborate temple in Khajuraho’s Western Group of Monuments, in Madhya Pradesh. Built under the Chandela rulers in the 11th century and dedicated to Shiva, it is a refined example of northern India’s Nagara temple architecture. Its clustered subsidiary spires rise toward a soaring central shikhara, creating a stone silhouette often interpreted as a sacred mountain. Dense bands of sandstone carving cover the exterior with deities, celestial figures, musicians, animals, couples, and scenes of courtly life; the celebrated erotic sculptures form only a small part of this broader visual world. From oblique angles, the repeating projections, recesses, and spires reveal the building’s rhythmic design, while low light deepens the reliefs and brings out the sandstone’s warm tones.
