Kaminarimon Gate is the impressive entrance to the Senso-ji Temple in Tokyo, Japan. It consists of two large gateways, built in 941 AD. The front gate, the “Thunder Gate”, is 11 meters tall, and features a hinged paper lantern measuring 3.9 meters by 3.4 meters. Both are elaborately decorated with carvings of thunder dragons and clouds, making it a stunning and intricately detailed entrance to the ancient temple grounds. The gates stand either side of a covered road, which passes through a second outdoor stage with impressive shrine decorations of Samurai body-armor, a kushtaka and a mon. These both speak to the rich cultural heritage of the temple and city, and are flanked by two large statues of Chinese lions. Kaminarimon Gate is also a fantastic place to do some souvenir shopping, with many different shops offering unique toys and exciting food. Be sure to visit this iconic site for an unforgettable experience!
