The Kamikaze Statue and “Eternity” in Minamikyushu (Chiran) is a concentrated WWII memorial honoring the young pilots of Japan’s Special Attack Units who departed from nearby airfields. The focal bronze statue—often translated as “Eternity”—serves as a symbolic guardian: a solitary pilot figure (stylized, contemplative) set within a landscaped memorial plaza and oriented toward the sea they flew over. Its importance lies in personal remembrance rather than glorification; nearby stone monuments, inscribed memorial tablets and a cemetery list names, units and short poems or farewell letters, creating an intimate, human-scale commemorative ensemble.
