The townhouses around Poznań’s Stary Rynek frame the Old Market Square, laid out in 1253 at the heart of the historic city. Their narrow frontages, varied gables and Renaissance and Baroque details reflect the commercial life and wealth of earlier generations of merchants. The colorful façades are not an untouched historic ensemble: many buildings were reconstructed after destruction during the Second World War, restoring earlier architectural forms. Repeated rows of windows contrast with individually shaped rooflines, decorative portals and plasterwork, giving the square its recognizable visual rhythm. A separate, distinctive group is the arcaded merchant houses known as domki budnicze, standing within the square beside the Renaissance Town Hall rather than along its perimeter. Their compact scale and closely packed, brightly colored fronts make them a characteristic part of the Poznań streetscape.
