Known locally as domki budnicze, Poznań’s merchant houses stand beside the Town Hall in the central block of Stary Rynek, the Old Market Square. These narrow buildings developed from wooden trading stalls into masonry houses during the 16th century, combining commercial space beneath ground-floor arcades with living quarters above. Traders here sold everyday goods including fish and salt, giving the row a history rooted in market life rather than aristocratic display. Reconstructed after wartime destruction, the houses are recognizable by their varied pastel and richly colored façades, decorative patterns, and individual gables. The repeating arches visually unite the slender buildings, while their modest scale contrasts with the neighboring Renaissance Town Hall.
