Kai Zenkōji Temple
📍 Japan
Kai Zenkōji is a Buddhist temple in Kōfu, the principal city of Yamanashi Prefecture, and part of the regional lineage of Zenkō-ji temples that spread from central Japan. The compound presents traditional wooden temple architecture—a gate, main hall and subsidiary buildings with tiled roofs and deep eaves—that reads well in photographs for its horizontal layers and interplay of shadow beneath the eaves. Approaches often include stone steps and lanterns that create strong leading lines toward the hall; seasonal changes in surrounding trees give the site distinct color contrasts. As an active temple, its quiet courtyard and ritual objects provide context for cultural photography; standard temple etiquette applies when photographing worship areas.
