📍 Sri Lanka
Kadadora Viharaya is a Buddhist temple submerged by the Kotmale Reservoir in Sri Lanka’s central highlands, near Udapalatha. The reservoir was created under the Mahaweli development programme, which transformed the valley and submerged villages and places of worship. When water levels fall sufficiently, the surviving shrine and its seated Buddha image reappear; these remains are not visible year-round. Weathered masonry, exposed reservoir sediment and the Buddha framed by the damaged shrine give the scene its distinctive character, preserving traces of a sacred place within a landscape reshaped for water storage and hydropower.
