K21 Ständehaus is a contemporary-art museum beside the Kaiserteich pond, just south of Düsseldorf’s city centre. Its nineteenth-century Neo-Renaissance building was constructed for the provincial parliament of the Prussian Rhine Province and later housed North Rhine-Westphalia’s state parliament. Today it belongs to the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, presenting contemporary art through painting, photography, sculpture and installations. The contrast between the historic exterior and the glass-domed central courtyard is central to its visual character: formal façades and arched windows outside give way to a spacious, light-filled exhibition setting within. From across the Kaiserteich, the waterside elevation and its reflections reveal the building’s symmetry, framed by the surrounding park’s trees.
