Philae, south of Aswan, is the name associated with the island sanctuary dedicated chiefly to the goddess Isis. The ancient temples originally stood on Philae Island but were dismantled and reassembled on nearby Agilkia Island during the international campaign to save Nubian monuments from rising reservoir waters. Built and expanded under Ptolemaic and Roman rulers, the complex preserves monumental pylons, relief-covered walls, colonnades, and sanctuaries that reveal the long survival of ancient Egyptian religion. Reached by boat, it is especially recognizable in photographs by its honey-colored stone rising directly above the Nile, with palm-lined banks, granite outcrops, and shifting reflections framing the architecture.
