A sculptural memorial in Sabinov depicts Jozef Kroner in his most famous screen role, Tóno Brtko, offering a tangible link between the town and Slovakia’s cinematic heritage. The installation commemorates Kroner’s nuanced portrayal of an ordinary Slovak small‑town shopkeeper caught in the moral complexities of wartime — the central figure of the Oscar‑winning 1965 film Obchod na korze (The Shop on Main Street). As a cultural landmark, the work is important both as a tribute to one of Slovakia’s most beloved actors and as a prompt for reflection on the film’s themes: conscience, complicity and human vulnerability under totalitarian pressure.
Designed as a life‑sized public figure placed where residents and visitors pass daily, the piece invites interaction and photography, making the character approachable rather than monumental. The sculptural treatment emphasizes expressive realism to capture Kroner’s sympathetic, conflicted bearing, so viewers who know the film recognize the emotional weight immediately. The memorial is a distinctive local curiosity — a direct, visible celebration of Slovak film history — and often features in guided town walks and cultural routes that highlight Sabinov’s artistic ties.
