Located near the Nantes-Brest canal in Brittany, Josselin Castle is a 13th century structure with a dramatic history. It was built by the powerful House of Rohan who maintained control of the region for centuries. Prominently set on the banks of the Oust river, the castle is made up of a keep and fortress, and surrounded by an ancient moat. As an impressive example of medieval military architecture, the castle is composed of five powerful towers and two drawbridges. Due to its strategic location, the castle has long served as a garrison, has been placed under siege on several occasions, and has been home to some famous figures in French history, such as Anne of Brittany and the military leader Marshal Vauban.Today, the castle is open to the public and you can explore the grounds and see the great views of Josselin along with the spectacular entrance hall. You can also admire the bright colors of the stained glass windows and the wall paintings, as well as a wide collection of furniture and medieval artifacts.
