Joo Chiat Road
📍 Singapore
Joo Chiat Road runs through a historic neighbourhood in eastern Singapore, closely connected with nearby Katong and the city’s Peranakan Chinese heritage. Named after landowner Chew Joo Chiat, the street reflects the area’s transformation from plantations into a residential and commercial district. Its conserved shophouses combine narrow frontages with shuttered windows, decorative plasterwork and patterned tiles, while covered “five-foot way” walkways link shops beneath the upper floors. For photographs, the street’s character lies in the contrast between these intricate façades and the working neighbourhood below: eateries, shop signs and everyday activity. The frequently photographed terrace of pastel shophouses is on adjoining Koon Seng Road, not Joo Chiat Road itself.
