John Day Fossil Beds National Monument - Painted Hills Unit, in Mitchell, United States, is a striking landscape of multicolored clay deposits. The dramatic reds, yellows and oranges of the exposed hillsides are said to make incredible photo subjects. Fox, deer and raptors can also make great subjects. A number of trails including Carroll Rim Trail and McKay Butte Trail will take you through the unique landscape, while a visit to the Clarno Arch with its easy access and views of the nearby hills is a must. Other attractions include the Thomas Condon Paleontology Center, which holds a number of fossil discoveries from the area, and the John day River, which runs alongside the monument.
