📍 China
Jiulongtan, or “Nine Dragon Pool,” marks the head of the Karamay River, an artificial waterway running through Karamay in Xinjiang. Nine sculpted dragons and a broad artificial waterfall turn this piece of urban water infrastructure into a monumental landscape feature. The dragon imagery draws on the creature’s longstanding association with water in Chinese culture. Water pouring from the dragons’ mouths, textured stonework and the pool below define the scene, while the abundance of flowing water offers a striking contrast to the arid surroundings of this oil-producing city in the Junggar Basin.
