📍 From Ohlsdorf Cemetery, Germany
Jesusdenkmal and Ohlsdorf Cemetery in Hamburg, Germany, is one of the largest cemeteries in Europe. The Jesusdenkmal monument commemorates the victims of 1848 unrest and the Hungarian Revolution, which was relocated to Hamburg in the 1960s and is the only monument in Germany dedicated to this event. The Ohlstadt Cemetery, located across the street, is Europe’s largest non-denominational cemetery and is home to a variety of monuments and artwork spread over millions of graves, some going back centuries. It contains memorials to various historical figures, such as the public health officer who tried to control the Hamburg cholera epidemic of 1850, and a war memorial to those killed in World War II. There are even many exotic plant species in the cemetery grounds. Both sites are a peaceful and contemplative space, visited not only by locals in need of reverence, but by tourists and photographers seeking to capture Hamburg's beauty and history.
