The Jan Palach Memorial in the heart of Staré Město in Prague is an important memorial to the Czech Republic's history. It commemorates the life of Jan Palach, a student who set himself on fire in a public protest against the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1969. The memorial is located in a peaceful park near the Charles Bridge, and consists of a bronze sculpture of Jan Palach kneeling in prayer, surrounded by four basalt rock monoliths representing friendship, humaneness, courage, and faith. It also includes a plaque with Palach's letter to the people of Czechoslovakia, encouraging them to fight for freedom. The memorial is open to the public to visit, for those who want to pay their respects to a man whose sacrifice inspired a nation.
