Jai Prakash Yantra
📍 India
Jai Prakash Yantra is a pair of sunken hemispherical instruments within Jaipur’s Jantar Mantar observatory, near the City Palace. Built as part of Sawai Jai Singh II’s eighteenth-century astronomical complex, the bowls translate the sky into a measurable diagram, with coordinate markings on their concave surfaces used to determine the positions of celestial bodies. Their complementary sections include gaps where observers can stand to read the scales, combining precise geometry with human access. Viewed from the rim, pale marble, fine dark markings and alternating solid and open sections reveal the depth and structure of the bowls—a distinctive expression of astronomy practiced through large architectural instruments rather than telescopes.
