Jahangir Mahal rises within Orchha’s fortified palace complex, across the Betwa River from the historic town. The early-17th-century palace was commissioned by Bundela ruler Bir Singh Deo in honor of the Mughal emperor Jahangir, and its design blends Mughal balance with Bundela forms. A monumental gateway leads into a broad square courtyard framed by arcades, projecting balconies, carved brackets and latticed openings, while domed chhatris crown the corners and roofline. The courtyard’s strong symmetry is especially striking from the upper galleries; higher levels also reveal layered views of neighboring Raja Mahal, Orchha’s temple spires, the river and the surrounding countryside. Weathered stone, surviving blue tilework and repeated geometric details give close photographs as much character as the palace’s imposing silhouette.
