Ivolginsky Datsan is a unique Tibetan Buddhist temple complex located in the Republic of Buryatia, Russia, about 170km east of Lake Baikal. Built in 1945, the temple was initially built as a monastery for the living reincarnation of the Dashi-Dorzho Itigilov, a famous lama when the Soviet Union was in power and Buddhism was officially banned. This iconic temple complex was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998. Inside Ivolginsky Datsan visitors will find an amazing view of impressive temple buildings, a number of stupas and prayer flags fluttering in the sun. Visiting Ivolginsky Datsan is sure to transport anyone into a world of serenity, with ornate statues of the Buddhas, traditional incense burning, and some amazing photo opportunities.
