📍 United Kingdom
The Italian Chapel, located on the small island of Lambholm in the Orkney Islands of Scotland, is a beautifully preserved Catholic chapel built by Italian prisoners of war during World War II. Captured in North Africa, these soldiers were sent to construct the Churchill Barriers to protect Scapa Flow. Creatively transforming two Nissen huts into a place of worship, they crafted an intricate and ornate interior using surplus and scrap materials. Today, the chapel stands as a symbol of resilience and peace, showcasing stunning frescoes, a delicate rood screen, and a masterfully painted sanctuary. This moving historical site is a short drive from Kirkwall and open to visitors year-round, offering a glimpse into a unique wartime story.
