Isola Bella is the tiny, rocky islet off Mazzarò bay at the foot of Taormina, connected to the shore by a narrow sandbar that can be submerged or exposed with the tide. Its visual appeal comes from the compact contrast of low Mediterranean scrub and pale rock against brilliant, glassy water, with the steep Taormina ridge framing the background and distant Etna often visible on the horizon. Photographically the site is about scale and textures: the tombolo creates a leading line to the islet, pebbled beaches and cliffs give granular detail, and low sun emphasizes warm rock tones and strong reflections in the sheltered coves. Because the connection to shore changes with sea level, the islet’s silhouette and access shift through the day, which defines how you compose shots and where people appear in the frame.
