Machu Picchu is an ancient Inca citadel perched atop a mountain in the Peruvian Andes. Built in the mid-15th century, it is believed to have been the stronghold of the last Inca emperor, Tupac Yupanqui. For centuries, the site was an enigma to Spanish conquistadors, who searched for it in vain. Today, Machu Picchu is one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world and an iconic symbol of Peru. Its spectacular terraced landscapes, ruined temples, and stunning views attract thousands of visitors each year. Visitors should come prepared for a steep hike on the Inca Trail or a more leisurely walk along the adjoining Sacred Valley. There are several attractions to explore within the Machu Picchu complex, including the Intihuatana, a sundial made of stone, and a cluster of temples atop the "Sun Gate".
