The Iran Mall Public Library, also known as the Jondishapur Library, occupies a grand hall within Iran Mall in northwestern Tehran, near Chitgar Lake. Its name recalls Gondishapur, a historic center of scholarship in southwestern Iran. Warm-toned woodwork, tall bookcases and upper-level galleries evoke the interiors of historic European libraries, while a large Persian carpet adds a distinctly Iranian layer of pattern and color. Long views through the hall reveal the symmetry of its shelving bays and gallery railings; people at floor level provide a clear sense of the room’s scale. The contrast between this formal, book-lined interior and the contemporary shopping complex around it gives the setting much of its visual character.
