The Iona Abbey and Nunnery is a historic religious site located on the island of Iona off the coast of Scotland. It is believed to have been founded in 563 by St. Columba, one of Scotland's most celebrated ancient saints, and is the oldest surviving abbey and nunnery in Scotland. The site is scattered across several acres and features a church, bell tower, cloister and graves. The Iona Abbey, which is still in use today by the Church of Scotland and members of the Iona Community, is a reminder of the island's past as a destination for religious pilgrims. It also contains some of Scotland's best examples of medieval stone architecture. Visitors may explore the grounds and take in the stunning vista across the island to the neighboring mainland. With the sounds of birds and the tumbling waves of the sea, the Nunnery is a peaceful and tranquil place to explore. Visitors can also explore the Iona Heritage Centre and the Iona Village, two must-see locations for any traveler or photographer.
