📍 Iceland
Ingólfur Arnarson is the Norse chieftain traditionally credited as Iceland’s first permanent settler and the founder of Reykjavík. According to the Landnámabók (the medieval Book of Settlements), he arrived in the late 9th century, threw his high-seat pillars into the sea, and vowed to settle wherever they washed ashore — a founding legend that gives Reykjavík its origin story and cultural significance.

Historically relevant: the saga account frames Ingólfur not as a mythical deity but as the initiating figure of Icelandic settlement, anchoring local identity and medieval land-claim practices. That story shaped place-names and civic memory across centuries. The main physical commemoration is the statue and small memorial on Arnarhóll hill in downtown Reykjavík, overlooking the old harbor and city center. The site is a focal point for civic ceremonies and public speeches and has become a symbolic meeting place used during national and municipal events. Nearby street names and squares recall his legacy, and the city’s name — “smoky bay” — links to the geothermal steam long noticed by early settlers. The combination of saga, monument, and urban geography makes Ingólfur Arnarson central to Reykjavík’s identity.
