📍 From Courtyard, Iran
Imam Reza Shrine forms the spiritual and urban heart of Mashhad in northeastern Iran, enclosing the tomb of Ali al-Rida, the eighth imam of Twelver Shi‘a Islam. The city developed around this pilgrimage site, which remains a major center of Shi‘a devotion. Its vast complex brings together expansive courtyards, arcaded façades, intricate tilework and mirrored interiors, with a gilded dome marking the imam’s tomb. The adjoining Goharshad Mosque, commissioned in the 15th century, adds an important layer of Timurid architecture. Visually, the shrine is defined by gold against blue and turquoise tiles, monumental gateways rising above crowds, and repeated arches framing the courtyards. Pilgrims gathering for prayer give these immense architectural spaces their human scale and devotional purpose.
