The Igreja e Convento de São Francisco stands in Salvador’s Pelourinho district, within the city’s colonial historic center. Built largely in the 18th century, the Franciscan complex is a major expression of Brazilian Baroque architecture. Its relatively restrained stone façade gives little warning of the church interior, where carved woodwork covered in gold leaf forms a dense setting of columns, arches, foliage, saints, and angels. The adjoining cloister offers a quieter visual rhythm, with arcaded galleries and extensive blue-and-white Portuguese tile panels. Photographically, the contrast between the warm gilded nave and the cool geometric courtyard is especially distinctive, while the church’s symmetrical front anchors the long perspective of Largo do Cruzeiro de São Francisco. As this remains a Catholic religious site, visitors should treat chapels and services with appropriate quiet and respect.
