Igreja de São Pedro stands in the heart of Óbidos’s walled old town, close to Rua Direita. The church has medieval origins but was substantially rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, giving it a layered history behind its restrained, whitewashed exterior. Inside, a richly gilded Baroque altarpiece provides a striking contrast to the simpler walls and single-nave layout. Josefa de Óbidos, the 17th-century painter celebrated for her religious works and still lifes, is buried here, connecting the church to one of Portugal’s notable artistic figures. Outside, the stone-framed entrance and bell tower anchor the small square; inside, the carved gold surfaces of the high altar are the defining visual detail.
