Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Penha is a small Catholic church in Penha, a rural community inland from Paraty’s colonial center on the mountain route toward Cunha. It reflects the quieter, agricultural side of the municipality, where settlements developed between the Atlantic Forest and historic paths crossing the Serra do Mar. The church’s compact façade, forecourt and backdrop of densely wooded slopes create a simple composition that contrasts with Paraty’s better-known coastal scenery. Nearby, the Tobogã waterfall and surviving sections of the Caminho do Ouro connect the village to both the landscape and the region’s colonial-era inland routes.
