Igreja da Misericórdia stands within Óbidos’s walled historic centre and is associated with the Santa Casa da Misericórdia, a historic charitable institution. Founded by Queen Leonor on the site of an earlier Chapel of the Holy Spirit, the church connects the town’s religious heritage with a tradition of community care. A glazed ceramic image of the Virgin and Child above the entrance provides a distinctive focal point against the whitewashed façade. Inside, patterned azulejo tiles and gilded woodwork contrast geometric repetition with carved ornament, while the main altarpiece draws the eye along the nave. Paintings by André Reinoso depicting the Visitation and Pentecost add another layer to the church’s decorative ensemble.
