Iglesia de San Juan Bautista stands on the main plaza of San Juan Chamula, a Tzotzil Maya town in the Chiapas highlands. Its white façade, turquoise-painted ornament and broad arched entrance form one of the community’s most recognizable views. Inside, Catholic saints and imagery coexist with Tzotzil ceremonial practices: there are no conventional pews, the floor is strewn with pine needles, and worshippers arrange candles, incense and offerings during healing and devotional rituals. The church remains an active sacred space rather than a conventional museum. Photography and video are strictly forbidden inside, so images should be limited to the façade, plaza and surrounding street life while respecting local worshippers.
