The Iglesia de la Universidad Laboral stands at the heart of Laboral Ciudad de la Cultura in Cabueñes, on the eastern edge of Gijón. It forms the ceremonial focus of the vast former Universidad Laboral complex, designed by architect Luis Moya and built in the mid-20th century for an institution originally created to educate children from mining families. The church’s unusual elliptical plan, monumental dome and ring of classical columns reflect the complex’s theatrical blend of classical and historicist architecture. From the main courtyard, its curved stone façade contrasts with the severe rectilinear buildings around it, while the Laboral’s tall square tower often rises behind the church, creating the site’s most recognizable composition. Inside, the broad, column-free central space emphasizes the scale and geometry of the dome.
