Iglesia de la Gratitud Nacional stands on Santiago’s Alameda, near the Los Héroes area and the western edge of the historic center. The Salesian church was conceived in the late 19th century as an expression of national thanksgiving after the War of the Pacific, a purpose preserved in its formal name, the Temple of National Gratitude to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Its neo-Gothic design contrasts sharply with the broad avenue and surrounding modern buildings: pointed arches, slender towers, a rose window, and richly articulated masonry draw the eye upward. From across the Alameda, the façade can be framed against Santiago’s dense streetscape, while closer views emphasize the layered stonework, religious sculpture, and the weathered textures of a landmark closely tied to Chilean Catholic history.
