The Church of San Carlos de Borromeo, commonly known as Iglesia de Chonchi, stands beside the main square of this hillside town on Chiloé Island. It is one of the 16 Churches of Chiloé inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, representing the archipelago’s distinctive fusion of European religious design and local timber-building traditions. Its symmetrical façade, arched entrance, and slender multi-tiered tower form a clear landmark above Chonchi’s sloping streets, while the wooden interior reveals the craftsmanship central to Chilote architecture. From the plaza, a frontal composition emphasizes the church’s balanced geometry; closer views bring out the textures of painted boards, shingles, and weathered wood.
