Hanazono Shrine is a Shinto sanctuary in central Shinjuku, close to Golden Gai’s narrow bar-lined lanes and the bustle of Kabukicho. Long regarded as a guardian of the district, it is closely associated with the prosperity of local businesses. Its vermilion-and-white shrine buildings, torii gates and tree-lined grounds create a striking contrast with the surrounding commercial streets and high-rise buildings. The broad approach gives the main hall a strong frontal composition, while views through the gates bring the shrine and modern city into the same frame. In November, its Tori-no-Ichi fairs transform the grounds with lanterns and stalls selling kumade—decorated bamboo rakes symbolizing the gathering of good fortune and business success.
