Houston Zoo
📍 United States
Houston Zoo is a 55-acre urban zoological park in Hermann Park, home to more than 6,000 animals representing 900 species. It’s important as a major conservation and education center in Texas, running breeding and habitat-restoration programs for endangered species such as Galápagos tortoises, black rhinos, and Asian small-clawed otters. Visitors experience immersive habitats—African Forest, Kipp Aquarium, McNair Asian Elephant Habitat—designed to mimic natural ecosystems and support modern animal care standards rather than traditional barred exhibits.

Opened in 1922 and substantially expanded after mid-20th-century redevelopment, the zoo’s layout emphasizes accessible pathways, shaded plazas, and water features integrated with exhibit architecture to reduce animal stress and improve viewing. Notable structural features include the Carolyn Farb Early Learning Campus and the renovated reptile and amphibian house with climate-controlled displays. Unique offerings include seasonal conservation events, “Zoo Lights” during winter, Behind-the-Scenes encounters by reservation, and a membership program that supports local rescue and research initiatives. The zoo collaborates with global conservation partners, making it a regional hub for wildlife science and public engagement.
