Hôtel de Ville de Bruxelles
📍 Belgium
Brussels Town Hall (Hôtel de Ville) stands on the Grand Place, the historic civic and commercial heart of Brussels. Built mainly in the 15th century, it is a landmark of Brabantine Gothic architecture, with pointed arches, sculpted figures and an openwork spire crowned by a gilded Saint Michael, the city’s patron saint. Its tower sits off centre between unequal wings, an asymmetry that reflects construction in successive stages. Across the cobbled square, its Gothic stonework contrasts with the ornate guildhalls, many rebuilt after the French bombardment of 1695, bringing two distinct chapters of the city’s architectural history into the same view.
