Honmaru Palace
📍 Japan
Honmaru Palace is the formal residential and administrative complex within the Honmaru (main bailey) of Nagoya Castle, sited beside the castle keep in central Nagoya. It is visually and culturally notable for its richly decorated palace interiors—rooms divided by painted fusuma and sliding screens that reflect the refined aesthetics of high-status castle architecture—reconstructed after wartime loss. Photographically, the palace yields strong compositional elements: long tatami rooms and corridors, repeated panels and transoms, glossy wooden floors that mirror gilt and pigment on the fusuma, and framed views from verandas into clipped gardens, all favoring low-angle, symmetry-focused compositions.
