📍 From Rte de l'Hongrin, Switzerland
The Hongrin Tunnel is situated 3km east of the Swiss village of Château-d'Œx, in the canton of Vaud. It is the longest tunnel in Switzerland, measuring 682 meters in length, and was cut between 1867 and 1869. Its construction was undertaken as part of the creation of one of the highest railway lines in Switzerland. To this day, the tunnel stands as a monument to the technical achievements of the 19th-century engineers who cut this feat of engineering out of sheer rock in a daring feat of engineering. The bright white railway track and moss-coated stone walls of the old tunnel provide a unique experience for travelers. An underground stream flows through the chamber exiting through a drainage system at the other end of the tunnel. Despite its proximity to a nature reserve in the surrounding Riou Valley, the tunnel has been kept in pristine condition ensuring that travelers get the best experience possible.
