Hollywood Sign is the most celebrated landmark of Los Angeles, California and one of the most recognizable images in the world. With its lettering standing about 14 meters (45 ft) in height, the sign is situated on Mount Lee, in the Hollywood Hills area of the Santa Monica Mountains. The iconic sign was painted white on a 31-meter-tall (102 ft) by 110 cm (43ft) by 10.6 cm (15.6 in) wood and metal hoarding. First erected in 1923, it reads "Hollywood" and was originally intended to advertise a local real estate development. It has become an internationally recognized symbol of the glamour and wealth associated with Hollywood. Popular locations to view the sign include Griffith Observatory, Griffith Park, Bronson Canyon, and Hollywood & Highland. Due to construction in the area, the access to the sign is limited. Visitors and photographers are advised to go as early as possible to avoid crowds and traffic and help protect the landscape.
