The Holländisches Viertel (Dutch Quarter) in Potsdam is a unique district that consists of roughly 350 traditional Dutch-style houses. Built from 1733-1740 by Dutch bricklayers, it was designed to provide housing for immigrants from the Netherlands that were invited to labour for the Prussian king Frederick William I. The colourful quarter took its name from the stone plaques that are still present on some of the house entrances, depicting the arms of Dutch cities. The facades of many of the houses in the quarter have recently been renovated and restored to their original state. The quarter has many interesting sights to explore, like the Dutch Windmill and the Dutch Church, as well as small lanes with plenty of atmosphere. There are several shops, restaurants and cafes, too. The Dutch Quarter is a beautiful part of Potsdam, highly recommended to explore on foot.
