Holland Bastion
📍 France
Holland Bastion is one of the projecting defensive works set into the stone ramparts of Saint-Malo, the insular walled town on Brittany’s northern coast, facing the English Channel and the Rance estuary. Visually it reads as low, angled masonry—weathered granite, embrasures and parapets—that negotiates sea and sky; the bastion’s horizontal lines and gun ports create rhythmic negative space against the town’s roofline. Photographs reward contrasts of rough stone and smooth water, shifting tidal flats and dramatic light from the west; from the ramparts you can frame the bastion in foreground with boats or the crenellated silhouette of Saint-Malo behind. The structure is integrated into the public ramparts walk around the city.
