The Hofgarten is the formal garden of Würzburg’s Residenz, the Baroque palace built for the city’s prince-bishops. Laid out in the 18th century, it extends along the palace’s eastern and southern sides and forms part of the UNESCO-listed Residenz ensemble. Clipped hedges, patterned flowerbeds, fountains and sculptures create a sequence of ordered views, with the palace façade as a backdrop. From the terraces, the garden’s geometry stands out against the surrounding trees.
