Hoàng Thành Huế, or the Imperial City of Huế, stands at the heart of the fortified Citadel on the north bank of the Perfume River. Built as the ceremonial and administrative center of the Nguyễn dynasty, Vietnam’s last imperial house, it forms part of the UNESCO-listed Complex of Huế Monuments. Visitors enter through the monumental Ngọ Môn Gate into a carefully ordered landscape of courtyards, pavilions, temples and the Thái Hòa Palace, with the former Forbidden Purple City deeper inside. Wars and political upheaval destroyed many structures, but surviving buildings and ongoing restoration reveal the court’s axial planning and architectural symbolism. Broad stone approaches, red lacquered columns, glazed yellow roof tiles, carved ornament and reflections in the surrounding water create the site’s most recognizable images, while gateways and aligned courtyards emphasize its formal symmetry and scale.
