📍 Vietnam
The Hmong King’s Palace in Sà Phìn is the former residence of the Vương family, set among the limestone mountains of northern Vietnam’s Đồng Văn Karst Plateau. Its best-known owner, Vương Chính Đức, was a powerful Hmong leader whose influence and wealth were closely linked to the region’s historic opium trade; “king” refers to his local authority rather than a Vietnamese royal dynasty. The enclosed compound combines Chinese courtyard architecture with Hmong building traditions, using stone foundations, timber galleries and clay-tiled roofs. Successive courtyards reveal layered rooflines, carved wooden details and substantial stonework, giving photographs a more intimate sense of the residence than its imposing outer walls alone.
