Hiranya Varna Mahavihar, also known as the Golden Temple or Kwa Bahal, is a Newar Buddhist monastery north of Patan Durbar Square in Lalitpur’s historic center. Its enclosed courtyard brings together gilded metalwork, carved timber, guardian figures and Buddhist imagery, reflecting the craft traditions for which Patan is known. The main sanctuary and smaller central shrine create a richly layered composition: gold-toned surfaces stand against dark wood and brick, while the courtyard’s compact scale rewards close attention to sculptural details rather than distant views. This is a living place of worship, where the architecture forms the setting for the continuing religious life of the local Newar Buddhist community.
