Himeji Castle, also known as Shiro or White Heron Castle, is an impressive, UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Himeji, Japan. Dating to 1346, it is the finest surviving example of Japanese castle architecture, and a must-see for any visitor to Japan. The castle is accessible from the JR, the national railway and it is surrounded by Japanese gardens and a vast moat. The castle is 30 meters tall and consists of 83 structures, gates and turrets. Inside there are many exhibitions and pieces of history, such as correspondence between daimyo and villagers. Of particular note is the Kiseimon Gate, the most important entrance gate to the castle. It is an imposing structure that seems to tower over the visitors as they approach.
