Hierve el Agua
📍 Mexico
Hierve el Agua is a natural spring and travertine formation near Roaguía, in Oaxaca’s Tlacolula district. Mineral-rich water flowing over the escarpment has deposited calcium carbonate in broad white curtains, creating the appearance of waterfalls frozen against the mountainside. The spring-fed pools above the cliffs frame expansive views across the rugged valley, while shallow water, pale mineral rims, and distant ridgelines create strong layers and reflections in photographs. Its name, meaning “the water boils,” refers to the bubbling springs rather than high temperatures. Remains of ancient Zapotec irrigation channels also reveal the site’s long relationship with water management and cultivation.
