📍 Azerbaijan
The Heydar Aliyev Center is a cultural complex in Baku, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects and opened in 2012. Named after Azerbaijan’s former president, it houses exhibition spaces, a museum and an auditorium. Its defining feature is a flowing white envelope that connects the building with its surrounding plaza, replacing conventional façades and rooflines with folds, crests and deep recesses. This fluid geometry marks a striking departure from the rigid forms of much of Baku’s Soviet-era architecture. Viewed from the landscaped grounds, the shell appears to rise from the earth in a sweeping wave; shadows trace its pale surfaces, while people crossing the plaza reveal the scale of the soaring curves.
