Hengifoss is a tall, narrow waterfall in Fljótsdalur, inland from Lagarfljót in eastern Iceland. It plunges from a dark basalt plateau into a steep amphitheater where vivid red bands divide successive lava layers. These iron-rich sediment horizons formed between volcanic eruptions, giving the cliff a striped geological record and making the falls especially recognizable. The hiking path climbs from the valley and passes Litlanesfoss, a smaller waterfall enclosed by striking basalt columns, before reaching frontal views of Hengifoss. From the final viewpoint, the pale ribbon of water, red strata, and black rock create a strong sense of scale; snow and lingering ice can add further contrast outside midsummer.
